Back to Greece
My first two posts on Fotopages were of our holiday to Greece last Ocober. We went to Agistri, which is a tiny island just an hour's boat ride from the port of Pireaus. We stayed in a beautiful place called Rosy's Little Village which was built like a minature Greek Village. The sun shone, the sea was warm, everyone was friendly and the wine flowed! It seems like another world now! These photos are for all of us enduring cold grey, Janaury skies and especially for the "Liberato girls" we met at Rosy's!!

The view from my chair
A grey dull, drizzly day with not much opportunity to take photos outside, so sitting at my desk (I work mostly from home) I took shots of what was in front of me....

The garden today

As a little experiment I took the camera outside at lunchtime to shoot the summer images from yesterday plus a few extra...

Flower power

After yesterday's gore fest here is something a little kinder on the eye!! All of these were taken in my garden last summer - seems hardly possible now looking at the bare earth and dead and dried plants...

Fishy fotos - not for the faint hearted!!
On Sunday we had ate Bloaters which are a type of Smoked Herring. The herring is a traditional fish is these parts and the fishing industry off Great Yarmouth thrived in the first half of last century. My Dad's side of the family lived and worked in the boats off Great Yarmouth and he can still remember seeing rows and rows of women gutting the fish along the habour.
Anyway, back to the Bloater...unlike Kippers they are prepared whole without gutting and soaked in brine for a short time and then smoked. They taste lovely and are very good for you - especially as everyone is telling us to eat more oily fish.
Picture 12 is a Red Herring - well 2 actually. We bought these last year when we couldn't get any Bloaters. They are also cured whole but are heavily salted and left for much longer before smoking. As this preserves them they last for much longer and so were much more popular before refridgeration. We were advised to saok them in cold water for several hours before cooking, but in spite of this they were pretty inedible, as they were still far to salty.
In case anyone is interested the term 'Red Herring' comes from days when dogs were used for tracking. The heavily smelling red herring were used to put the dogs off the scent....

Sunday Football

I've been practicing my action photography most Sunday morning's since last September by taking pics of my son's football team (or Soccer to our friends over the pond!). These are some from yesterday's game - which my son's team won 6-1.

Magic sand
My daughter got some magic sand for Christmas which forms solid lumps in water but then turns into grains of sand again when its taken out. She has played with it for hours (while her mother has hung around with the camera!)
